Sisters Becky Downie and Ellie Downie are Nottingham based British artistic gymnasts, who have already won multiple championship medals and are well placed to add to their collection at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Team GB Elite Artistic Gymnast Ellie competes on four pieces of apparatus, Bars, Beam, Floor and Vault, of which floor & vault are her speciality pieces.
2015 was an amazing year for me as I gained GB’s first ever AA podium finish at a major Championships (Europeans) which also resulted in me winning BBC Young Sports Personality Of The Year.
Ellie’s breakthrough into senior gymnastics came at the 2015 European championships when she won bronze in the all-around and as a result was awarded BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. In 2017 she broke two British records, the first was qualifying for all four finals at a major championship (Europeans) and then she became the first British gymnast to win an all-around gold medal, which she backed up with two silvers and a bronze medal at the same event.
Before gymnastics Becky studied ballet, tap and stage dance. Her passion for gymnastics began at a very young agebars/beam when she would dedicate time to training every Saturday morning. Her love of the sport quickly accelerated and her training quickly increased and she now dedicates 30 hours per week to gym and conditioning. She was placed third at her first regional competition when she was just nine years old.
I feel so lucky to have fallen in love with a sport that’s changed my life forever.
Becky won her first British title when she was just twelve years old and competed in her first International when she was thirteen. Training quickly increased and she now dedicates around thirty hours per week. Her glittering career has included experiences at the Commonwealth Games, nine European Championships, seven World Championships and two Olympic Games.
