Mary reaches her 15th year at 92.03.2020
We recently spoke to Mary, Installations Coordinator at 9, who has just reached her 15th year at 9 Group! Mary has been an integral part of the team throughout these years, so we wanted to find out how it feels to reach such a milestone, her favourite memory and what advice she’d give to someone new starting at 9.
How does it feel to reach 15 years at 9 Group?
Bizarre. It really doesn’t seem that long ago.
I remember when I first started, James (our current MD) became my boss around 2 months in and we were taking bets on how long I’d last! 15 years on and I think I won that one.
How has 9 changed since you first started working here?
I don’t think 9 has changed much over the years, apart from increasing in size and our recent lovely office upgrade!
The thing that has changed the most is the technology – particularly over to hosted. The tech that is available now is easier, more economical and cheaper.
Broadband has especially come on leaps and bounds – I remember cable modems back when I started!
Has your role changed over the years?
I wouldn’t say that my role has changed significantly as an Installations Coordinator, apart from the fact that I am much more customer focused on the phones daily. But it’s great, it means you really get to know our customers better and build relationships.
I’m a Gemini, who are known as communicators by nature, so working with customers comes naturally to me and I really enjoy it.
I recently installed a second system for a customer who I’ve known for 15 years. I helped install their first system back in 2006!
What is your favourite thing about working for 9?
It would have to be the people at 9! I get on with my team really well, in fact I get on with everyone really well. I’m considered part of the furniture now.
Do you have a favourite memory?
My favourite memory that jumps out to me would be the Ibiza-themed Christmas party of 2018, it was spectacular!
Amazing location and performances, I don’t think anything will top that.
If you could give some advice to someone new starting at 9, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and advice from those who have been with 9 for a while. We love to share our knowledge and experiences from working across so many different systems and growing relationships with many customers.
There’s so much jargon in this industry, it can be hard to get your head around it but your team is there to support you and teach you all of the acronyms.
I always say, I wish I could just download my knowledge into the new starters (although I’m sure this will be achievable some point in the near future – scary!).
